The Door (CO) to wonder.

"There's something mesmerizing about fall foliage—the way the leaves transform, painting the landscape in vibrant reds, oranges, and yellows. It’s a beautiful reminder that there is beauty in change, in letting go, and in embracing new seasons."

Door County, Wisconsin, is a picturesque peninsula nestled between Green Bay and Lake Michigan, renowned for its charming small towns, scenic shorelines, and rich cultural heritage. Often referred to as the "Cape Cod of the Midwest," this popular vacation destination is dotted with historic lighthouses, quaint villages, and over 300 miles of shoreline, offering visitors a quintessential lakeside experience.

The county is composed of 19 small communities, each with its own unique character. Sturgeon Bay, the largest town and the county’s gateway, is known for its lively arts scene, maritime heritage, and historic shipyards. Door County’s unique culture is heavily influenced by its Scandinavian heritage, evident in the architecture, cuisine, and annual festivals. A visit wouldn’t be complete without experiencing a traditional fish boil, where freshly caught whitefish is cooked in a large kettle over an open fire—a ritual often accompanied by storytelling and local music. Seasonal events like the Door County Cherry Blossom Festival and fall harvest celebrations add to the region’s appeal, making it a year-round destination. For those looking to relax and unwind, Door County also offers serene beaches, quiet coves, and ample opportunities for boating, kayaking, and wine tasting at one of its many local vineyards. Whether you’re interested in outdoor adventures, arts and culture, or simply soaking in the tranquil lakeside atmosphere, Door County provides a perfect blend of natural beauty and Midwestern charm.

PLACES WE CHECKED OUT!

Wood Orchard Market (Egg Harbor)
While not a traditional apple-picking orchard, Wood Orchard Market is a must-visit for apple lovers. Known for growing several apple varieties, including Honeycrisp and Sweetango, the market has become a local favorite for its fresh apple products, baked goods, and cider. Visitors can sample different apple varieties and bring home a selection of fresh apples from the store. We especially loved their apple donuts, scones, and Tuscan bread, which were all delicious treats that perfectly captured the flavors of the season. This charming market is an essential stop for anyone visiting Door County in the fall.

Go Apple Picking
Door County, Wisconsin, is famous for its many local farms and a farm-to-plate approach that is celebrated in some of the best restaurants in the area. Apples, in particular, are a highlight of the fall season, making apple picking one of the best activities to experience on the peninsula. A visit to one of the orchards offers the chance to bring home a taste of the season, and it's one of the best souvenirs to share with family and friends. We tried Cortland apples for the first time, and they quickly became a new family favorite! Crisp, juicy, and full of flavor, they were the perfect fall snack.

Where We Picked: Hyline Orchard Farm Market
Located in Egg Harbor, Hyline Orchard Farm Market is a family-owned orchard at the heart of Door County. Known for its fresh, locally grown apples, Hyline offers a wide array of apple products, including cider, apple butter, and baked goods. Visitors can pick their own apples during the harvest season or purchase pre-picked fruit and other local treats from the farm market. We found the market’s selection of jams, jellies, honey, and other goodies to be a delightful way to sample the flavors of the region. Hyline is a fantastic stop for anyone exploring Door County, especially in the fall when the orchard is in full swing and the countryside is ablaze with autumn colors.

We Also Checked Out: Seaquist Orchards Farm Market (Sister Bay)
Seaquist Orchards is another excellent spot for those looking to enjoy the apple harvest and family-friendly activities. Although their pick-your-own apple season had ended by the time we visited, the orchard’s market and bakery still offered plenty of treats to enjoy, from apple cider donuts to homemade jams. Families can find a range of activities, including a playground, corn maze, and farm-themed games, making Seaquist a top destination for apple picking with kids. We were glad we stopped by, even though the harvest season had just wrapped up, as there was still so much to see and enjoy.

Sister Bay’s Fall Fest
Sister Bay’s Fall Fest is a beloved annual event held every October, marking the end of the fall season in Door County. The event features a vibrant parade, arts and crafts vendors, live music, and plenty of delicious local food, including the iconic fish boil. There are also plenty of family-friendly activities, from a classic car show and pumpkin bowling to carnival rides and games. We only had about an hour and a half to explore, but it was time well spent, and we were so glad we made it out to experience this lively celebration. The festival brought together the community to revel in the season's beauty and spirit, making it a must-visit for anyone exploring Door County in the fall.

A trip to Door County, Wisconsin, this fall cannot be complete without a drive down the famous Coastal Byway for a picture-perfect autumn experience. The drive immerses you in a stunning display of red, orange, and brown hues, with views of Lake Michigan, Green Bay, forests, the Niagara Escarpment, and picturesque small towns by the water. The Byway stretches over 66 miles, from Sturgeon Bay at the peninsula's southern tip to Northport and Gills Rock at the northernmost point. It’s the perfect way to take in the full splendor of Door County’s scenic beauty.

Visit Washington Island
Washington Island, located off the tip of the Door County peninsula, is a must-visit destination accessible by a 30-minute ferry ride from Northport. There is free parking if you prefer to leave your car on the mainland, but taking your vehicle or bike is recommended for easier exploration. The island offers open spaces, forests, and stunning water views, all framed by the beautiful colors of fall.

Top Stops on Washington Island

  • Schoolhouse Beach: This stunning beach is one of the world's few beaches covered in smooth, white limestone rocks instead of sand. The polished stones have been smoothed by waves over thousands of years, giving the beach its unique look and feel.

  • Sand Dunes Park: Known for its pristine waters, this is another great spot to enjoy the island’s natural beauty.

  • Fragrant Isle Lavender Farm: Although the lavender bloom ends in August, this farm is a delightful stop during peak season. My kids especially loved their lavender pillow spray!

Peninsula State Park
One of Wisconsin's most popular parks, Peninsula State Park spans over 3,700 acres of natural beauty. The park offers eight miles of shoreline, 20 miles of hiking trails, and stunning panoramic views of the bay. Activities include hiking, biking, swimming, and even golfing. The park is home to the historic Eagle Bluff Lighthouse, which dates back to 1868 and provides beautiful views of the bay.

Eagle Trail
Eagle Trail is one of the most popular and challenging hikes in Peninsula State Park. This 2-mile loop takes hikers through lush forests, rocky bluffs, and down to the shore of Green Bay. The trail features limestone cliffs, caves, and scenic overlooks, offering breathtaking views of the water. Although the terrain is rugged, the kids loved the thrill of climbing rocks, exploring caves, and discovering the diverse plant life and wildlife along the way. We even spotted five deer during our hike!

Lighthouses of Door County
Door County is home to 11 historic lighthouses, many of which have been guiding mariners since the 1800s. Some still function, while others now serve as museums.

Cana Island Lighthouse (Baileys Harbor)
One of Door County's most iconic landmarks, the Cana Island Lighthouse, was built in 1869 and has been a beacon on Lake Michigan for over 150 years. Visitors can cross a short causeway to reach the island and climb 97 steps to the top of the lighthouse for breathtaking views of the surrounding coastline. The lighthouse museum provides a fascinating look into the area’s rich maritime history.

Kurtz Corral

We are an ‘experience over possessions’ family. Instead of buying toys for the twin’s birthday, we choose experiences instead. Emmie’s new obsession is huge for horses right now. I found Kurtz Corral online and was lucky to find availability for her to have a lesson! Kurtz Corral is a popular horseback riding destination located in Door County, Wisconsin, offering scenic trail rides through the area's beautiful countryside. Nestled in the woods, the corral provides a range of riding experiences for all skill levels, from beginners to seasoned riders. The trails wind through lush forests, open meadows, and gentle hills, allowing riders to take in the natural beauty of the area, especially during the fall when the foliage bursts into vibrant colors.

Hands On Art Studio

For Foster’s outing, I surprised my artsy boy with a creative date to Hands On Art Studio. The studio is a creative space where visitors can explore their artistic side through activities like painting, pottery, glass fusing, and metal art. Open to all ages and skill levels, the studio offers a welcoming environment where guests can craft their own unique pieces, guided by friendly staff. It’s a perfect spot for families and friends to relax, get creative, and take home personalized souvenirs, making it a must-visit for anyone looking to enjoy a fun, hands-on experience in Door County. Foster painted a fall leave on wood; my favorite red colored leaves. He also painted a box for all ‘his goodies like my money’. He has a new fascination with money, and money from all over the world (plus keeping things away from his siblings!)

Wineries
If you’re a wine lover, you can’t miss the Door County wineries. With over a dozen in the area, each offers a unique selection of wines, from dry and bold to sweet and fruity. While there are guided wine tours available, I managed to pop in during small windows of time, tasting and visiting in “full mom form,” quickly like a stealth ninja!

Harbor Ridge Winery
Topping the list is Harbor Ridge Winery, one of Door County’s most luxurious and popular wineries. Known for its exquisite wine culture, unique interior, and captivating ambiance, Harbor Ridge offers a vast collection of wines to suit every palate. Their fun and catchy wine names, like "Carmen’s Last Dance" and "Cherry Crush," add a playful touch to the experience. The winery also boasts a spectacular collection of gifts, making it an ideal stop for wine lovers.

Stone’s Throw Winery
Another favorite is Stone’s Throw Winery, which has been awarded the “Best Wine Bar in Wisconsin” by Lux Life Magazine. Inspired by California’s Napa Valley, this tasting spot creates world-class wines using grapes sourced from farms in Sonoma, Monterey, and Napa. Made with traditional wine-making techniques, their products showcase outstanding quality. The tasting room is open daily from 10 AM to 5 PM, offering visitors a delightful opportunity to explore the winery’s offerings.

Sunsets

Sunsets in Door County, overlooking the bay, are nothing short of magical, especially during the fall. As the sun dips below the horizon, the sky bursts into a vibrant tapestry of warm oranges, pinks, and purples, reflecting off the calm waters of Green Bay. The surrounding landscape, with its brilliant fall foliage, adds layers of fiery reds, golden yellows, and deep oranges, creating a breathtaking contrast against the fading light. It’s a moment where nature’s colors come alive, offering a serene, almost surreal beauty that captures the essence of autumn in Door County.

Places We Missed But Recommend

  • Cave Point County Park: Located on the peninsula’s east side, this park is known for its limestone cliffs, sea caves, and crystal-clear waters. It’s one of Door County’s top attractions, perfect for hiking, kayaking, or simply relaxing on the beach.

  • Eagle Tower at Peninsula State Park: We missed the chance to visit the recently renovated Eagle Tower, but it’s a fantastic spot to get a bird’s eye view of Door County. Visitors can reach the top by climbing steps or taking the accessible 850-foot ramp that winds through the treetops.

Travelschooling

Travelschooling is more than just hitting the road with books in tow; it's about turning every destination into a classroom and every experience into a lesson. It’s seeing history come to life at a monument, learning geology by hiking a canyon, or understanding ecosystems by exploring a forest. Through travelschooling, education becomes an adventure, blending traditional lessons with the richness of real-world experiences.

The twin’s first grade curriculum is through The Good and The Beautiful. Their online curriculum offers a faith-based, comprehensive approach to learning. It integrates subjects like language arts, math, science, and social studies with a focus on character development and values. Designed to be engaging and easy to follow, it features interactive lessons, beautiful illustrations, and hands-on activities to keep young learners engaged. This curriculum emphasizes simplicity and a love of learning, making it a popular choice for homeschooling families who want a solid, well-rounded education for their children.

Hawkins is enjoying Liberty University Online Academy's 6th Grade program as it provides a flexible, Christ-centered curriculum that covers core subjects such as language arts, math, science, and social studies. It aims to build a solid academic foundation while incorporating biblical principles into everyday learning. The online platform is user-friendly, with interactive lessons, multimedia resources, and assignments that can be completed at the student's own pace. This approach allows families to adapt the program to fit their schedule, making it ideal for those who prioritize flexibility and a faith-based educational experience.

As a family, we have teamed up with Abeka’s Christian Video Curriculum. We usually start our morning doing our 30 minutes of bible class. Abeka offers a structured, faith-based education. This program uses engaging video lessons led by experienced, passionate teachers who bring subjects like math, language arts, science, history, and Bible studies to life.

Music holds a special place in our family. Hawkins has decided to play the euphonium when he joins the band at Argyle schools, and he’s making great progress as he learns this new instrument—though we might invest in a mute soon to keep things a bit quieter! The twins are continuing their piano lessons virtually through New Song School of the Arts. Emmie is excelling and picking things up quickly, while Foster faces more challenges due to his ADHD. Although virtual lessons can be a bit tough for him, we’re committed to keeping both of them engaged and growing in their musical journey.
